R&D Scientist – Non- Ferrous Metal Treatment (NFMT)

There are three main types of non ferrous metals: aluminium, magnesium and copper. Aluminium casting is dominated by the automotive industry. There is a continuing market requirement to reduce vehicle weight and to increase fuel efficiency. When aluminium alloys are cast, there are many potential sources of defects which can harm the quality of the casting such as shrinkage defects, gas porosity and oxide inclusions. Sand casting, Tilt casting, Low Pressure and High Pressure casting are the most commonly used casting process for aluminium as well as magnesium alloy castings. Magnesium alloy castings are used for aerospace, automotive and electronic applications. Their main advantage is their light weight. The melting of copper and copper-based alloys also presents special problems. Molten copper dissolves both oxygen and hydrogen and on solidification, these can cause porosity in the casting.

Foseco supplies products and equipment for each of the non ferrous metal types to prevent casting defects. 

The purpose of the job is to develop and support non ferrous metal treatment products for the global market to grow and protect the Foundry non ferrous business.

The job holder is working on several projects. The main focus is to ensure metal cleanliness, inclusion identification and removal to ultimately have a defect free cast part. You are a determined and result-oriented person who is willing to go the extra mile for project realisation and to grow in the company.

Who are we looking for?         

  • Master’s or Ph.D Degree in Material Science, Casting or related field.
  • A candidate with knowledge, understanding and hands-on experience working in aluminium casting.
  • Understanding and knowledge of rotary degassing, melt cleanliness and assessment methods.
  • Willing to do the heavy work in labs, work with liquid non-ferrous alloys, moulding etc.
  • Ability to work in and knowledge of tools & Software like FactSage, Ansys, Console, Minitab and excel is desirable.
  • Knowledge and experience in metallography, tensile testing, SEM, XRD, DTA, DSC etc.
